As the International Expo and Innovation Forum for Sustainable Chemical Production, AchemAsia offered a clear profile. And this platform was used: There was hardly a stand where the exhibitors' products were not attractively presented. Visitors were not only able to obtain comprehensive information, but also to inspect the pumps, filter presses, valves, stirrers and many other components from all sides and experience them in operation - in line with the basic idea of AchemAsia, not only to talk about equipment and processes, but also to make them tangible.
Both exhibitors and visitors were very satisfied with the decision to hold AchemAsia in Shanghai for the first time in 30 years and thus move closer to some of the country's industrial centres. “The courage to change has paid off", says Dr. Thomas Scheuring, CEO of DECHEMA Ausstellungs-GmbH, and refers not only to the change of location, but also further innovations in the concept of the event. For one, AchemAsia 2019 focused strongly on five key topics, which are also very important in the current Chinese five-year plan.
Around 10,500 participants took the opportunity to get an idea of the state of the art in the fields of process technology, digitization, water management, pharmaceutical technology and plant and process safety and to discuss tomorrow's trends in the congress. The integration of lecture halls and exhibition in one hall ensured short distances. This not only gave the participants a comprehensive overview, but also enabled them to hold many discussions despite the fact that the conference lasted only three days: Well over 90 % of the visitors were highly satisfied with their participation in AchemAsia.
AchemAsia has developed along the Chinese process industry for 30 years. This is also reflected in the composition of the exhibitors: by far the largest participation came from the People's Republic of China with 222 exhibitors, Germany with 62 exhibitors was the second largest group, followed by France, Japan and the US. In comparison with the previous event in Beijing in 2016, the number of exhibitors was 11% higher and the exhibition space around 15% higher.
The topics of the satellite symposia were geared to the focal themes of the exhibition. Participants were able to find out about the latest trends in the lectures and then take a closer look at the practical implementation at the stands. The fact that the idea of greater integration of lecture programme and exhibition was well received was also demonstrated by the response to the individual sessions, among which the PRAXISforum "New Products and Services" with exhibitor lectures, the CIESC Forum "Green and Intelligent Equipment" and the session on "Industrial Water Management and Resources Recovery" were particularly popular.
At the opening ceremony, Chinese and German representatives praised the long-term trusting cooperation that has made AchemAsia a success story. "It is safe to say that AchemAsia has witnessed China’s three decades of reform and opening up and China’s extraordinary performance", said Chen Lei, deputy head of department at the China Association of Science and Technology. Zhao Jungui, Vice President of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, expressed his hope that AchemAsia could act as a driving force for the formation of a community of academia, science, technology and industry with a shared future. Jürgen Nowicki, Managing Director, Member of the Board of Directors of Linde Engineering Division and Chairman of the ACHEMA Committee, thanked the organizers for the long lasting good cooperation and underlined the strong anchorage of AchemAsia in China as well as the high degree of internationality.
The extent to which the global process industry has grown together is also demonstrated by the strong Chinese presence at ACHEMA. Organizers and exhibitors now have to start preparing for the next highlight: This will be ACHEMA 2021, which will take place from 14-18 June 2021 in Frankfurt am Main.
